Real Philly Cheesesteak in Texas?

If someone asked you for the best barbecue or Tex-Mex in Austin, you could probably give them a few recommendations. But where would you send someone for authentic Philly Cheesesteaks in Austin? If you’d tell them they have to book a ticket to Philly, you may not be familiar with the little piece of Philly right here in East Austin that is R&B’s Steak and Fries.

Brothers Arman and Kristan Elliott and their childhood friend Viet Nguyen moved to Austin in 2017 and noticed that the cheesesteak market was “extremely lack-luster.” This inspired them to create their own concept and launch their own cheesesteak shop that specializes in authentic Philly Cheesesteak style sandwiches. They’re serving up “perfectly grilled Texas ribeye on a fresh Amoroso roll topped with deliciously melted cheese,” and you can “get saucy and add sautéed onions with the perfect drizzle (or monsoon) of melted Whiz cheese for a classic Philly cheesesteak.” Or if you prefer chicken, they also serve chicken cheesesteaks and chicken cheesesteak fries. Speaking of cheesesteak fries, when you visit (because we know you will), try their award-winning Cheesesteak Fries or the Cheesesteak Hoagie with American Cheese.

R&B’s Steak and Fries has been voted best cheesesteak in Austin and in the state of Texas. Founders Elliott and Nguyen say they didn’t know that three years after launching their own food truck they would be considered the best in town, and even the best in Texas. Here’s the advice they share for others interested in starting their own food truck, “If we were to give advice to anyone looking to get into the food truck game, it would be simple and straightforward. I would tell them that they would 100% absolutely have to love it and be passionately obsessed with it or else it won't be successful because there's just that much work involved. Also we'd tell them to be unique in their cuisine choice so that they can stand out amongst the crowd.”
