5 Off-The-Grid Destinations You Must Visit

Let’s be honest for a moment — last year, you told yourself you were going to travel more. Planned on getting your passport, hopping on the jet and taking in some landscapes so beautiful they’d make your haters have to apologize. But that didn’t happen. Life happened. But now that we’re in a new year, it’s a chance to try again. And we’ve got five stunning destinations for your next getaway.

5. Oaxaca, Mexico

Everybody knows about Cancun and Cozumel, and those are great destinations for a beautiful getaway, but for something off the beaten path in Mexico, Oaxaca is the place to go. Famous for its culinary traditions, the “land of seven moles” takes food and drinks seriously. From the popularity of street food to the emphasis on mezcal, there’s no reason to go hungry here. Beyond food, Oaxaca has much to offer including beaches, a ton of historical items and locations, and even healing rituals.

4. Colmar, France

If you’ve ever wanted to explore the beauty of a French provincial town, then consider Colmar. With cobblestone streets and renaissance architecture, it’s maintained the beauty of an era long gone while still boasting more modern flourishes and storefronts. Colmar is nestled on the Alsace Wine Route, and local vineyards specialize in Riesling and Gewürztraminer wines. The city is also known for its canal system which earned it the nickname of Little Venice.

3. Chefchaouen, Morocco

More times than not, when it comes to Morocco, Americans don’t know much — if anything, it’s Marrakesh. It’s the economic center, there’s beautiful stuff to see, blah, blah, blah. But if you’re ready to get off the mainstream and experience a more authentic Morocco, Chefchaouen is a great place to land. First and foremost, get your cameras ready. Known as the Blue City, the first thing you’ll notice is that the landscape is covered in shades of blue. Beyond that, fall in love with the food. Moroccan cuisine is known for its use of a vast range of spices, aromatic herbs and traditional methods. If you want to truly immerse yourself in the culture, consider staying in one of the popular Airbnbs and take in the local flavor through and through. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, head over to the Rif Mountains and explore the picturesque peaks surrounded by gorges and valleys.

2. Cartagena, Colombia

We all know the drug jokes when it comes to Colombia, but this coastal village deserves a serious look. With a great mix of the traditional and modern in Playa de Bocagrande, it’s easy to find yourself in a mix of Spanish-Colonial architecture — restored or the remains — and modern restaurants, shops, and boutique hotels. And with the vibrant colors of the area, your Instagram will really be shining.

1. Yoho National Park, British Columbia, Canada

If you’re wanting a getaway that still feels familiar, Yoho National Park is the place to go. Book your stay at Emerald Lake Lodge and take in a picture-perfect experience all around. There’s tons to do within the park including fishing, hiking, skiing, and more. If you’re up for adventure, try exploring the park to find their Red Chairs — pairs of red Adirondack chairs strategically placed at scenic locations throughout the park with breathtaking views of mountains, lakes, and rivers. You probably won’t see Drake though — it’s a bit far from Toronto.
